Hi Natural Birthers!
We apologize for the gap in updates to the site. We just welcomed our newest addition to our family this past month. It was a lovely Hynobabies home water-birth and mom and baby are doing great!

We are busy on a couple of other projects that demand our full attention right now, Elizabeth is teaching Hypnobabies Classes in Costa Mesa and I am working on several other web projects currently. We both are dedicated to increasing the ease of entry for parents new to Natural Childbirth and Parenting, and expanding the offerings of BabyOhm.
Toward that end, we'd love to hear from you at Admin (at) babyohm (dot) com! Please let us know what you are looking for in the Natural Birth Community that you haven't found yet. We are talking to a few other people about expanding the content of the site to include videos and possibly podcasts from midwives and doulas. In the meantime, to eliminate the spam that has crept in, we are disabling the commenting for now. Sorry for the inconvenience!
Above all, we're committed to making BabyOhm a resource that nourishes and grows the natural birthing community. Thank you for your support!

In the past few catalogs I have received from this company (I assume simply because I gave birth to a child), I have seen this advertisement for a "ThumbGuard".
It has made me made me laugh, made me angry, and made me cry. Until finally, it made me write.

I often tell people when the discussion comes up as to where my son will go to school (as if most people have that figured out at 11 months old) that he will not go to public school. I am then usually bombarded with how the schools in their neighborhood have high test scores or that their particular school is amazing. While I have no doubt these claims are accurate, they do not impress me.
I do not see public school as the devil. It definitely serves a purpose and for many children it is a safety net. It was for me. My public school teachers were the reasons I survived my childhood and one of them in particular still serves the role of a mother for me.
So why no public school for my child? Oh, where to begin...

PBS Frontline has The Vaccine War available to watch on their website and you can find the full interviews that did not make it in to the report here. Reports like this do not aid in educating the populace, especially when allegations of open bias and omission of key information are raised. They do not encourage open discussion of multiple viewpoints and the data points in support of each of these viewpoints. Lastly, they collapse the discussion into an US vs THEM that allows one to create misleading associations between people who have similar viewpoints as a means of discrediting them.
For example, I am a firm believer in the importance of a mobile populace who have full access to a variety of transportation options from effective public transportation to inexpensive private transportation. In this one area, I am in agreement with the person widely believed to be the driving force behind the VW Beetle. Outside of this one instance, our views diverge dramatically and I prefer to avoid any associations.

Exercise

Squatting, in my opinion is the most valuable pose for pregnancy and childbirth. In a full squat position, your pelvis opens up about 20% more than any other position your body can be in, it shortens the birth canal, and employs gravity to encourage the baby to move down.
Squatting is important for many reasons. It helps open the hips, strengthens & stretches the thighs, elongates the spine, and can even assist in breaking up scar tissue in the cervix (caused by previous cervical procedures or previous births), in addition it can bring relaxation to the pelvic floor muscles. During labor and birth, squatting can help by opening the pubic symphysis in the pelvis making more room for the baby.

Pose of the Week: Trikonasana (Triangle Pose)
If you're moving along into your 2nd or 3rd Trimester, you've probably begun sleeping on your side. Often times this causes pain or numbness in the hips as well as restlesness in the legs. By practicing Trikonasana or Triangle Pose you will be able to stretch the out hip and the inner thighs, strengthen the legs, and elongate the spine. For this pose you may need a yoga block or a similar prop.

One of the most common pregnancy related complaints I hear from my pregnant clients and prenatal yoga students is back pain. Low back pain, mid back pain, shoulder and neck pain...you name it, most pregnant women feel it at one point or another! What pose comes to the rescue?? Cat/Cow stretches!
This flow of movement between two poses works on stretching your entire spine, releases low back tension, helps gently tone the abdominal muscles, and helps lubricate the spine. This post is safe for all trimesters and can also be extremely beneficial during labor to alleviate tension or to help with “back labor”.

Do you have any MacNeil products in your medicine cabinet? The answer is probably yes. MacNeil (a Johnson & Johnson company) announced a recall of 43 of their products on Friday. This includes infant and toddler Tylenol, Benadryl, Zyrtec, and Motrin.
A full list of the recalled products, as well as a lot number checker can be found here.

When thinking about the actual act of birthing a child, what muscles do you think we use the most? To me, the most obvious are the abdominals, the muscles of the pelvic floor, and the legs... well thank goodness for Warrior II, because that is just what this pose is for. In addition to strengthening these areas, it also increases the flexibility in the hips and groin, it increases stamina, and stretches the back and the legs.
Warrior II is probably one of the most well known poses in yoga and is one of the most beneficial for pregnancy, both for strengthening the body and alleviating prenatal discomforts. Done right, this pose can build up muscle in the inner thighs, help keep the abdominal muscles strong, can help maintain good posture, and can encourage you to engage and strengthen the pelvic floor.
